Use this result with confidence
Find how many 200 m or 400 m laps make your distance, including a partial lap. Calculate lap times for 5K, one mile or a custom distance.
Use the lap length you intend to measure
Choose 200, 300 or 400 m, or enter a custom lap length from 50 to 1,000 m. This is the distance used in the arithmetic. The calculator does not infer a lane length, starting position or the dimensions of a particular track.
Worked example: 5 km on a 400 m lap
Divide 5,000 m by 400 m. There are 12 complete laps, covering 4,800 m, followed by 200 m. The decimal value 12.5 describes the total number of laps including the fraction; it does not mean 13 complete laps.
| Item | Distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| One full lap | 400 m | 1:36 |
| 12 complete laps | 4,800 m | 19:12 |
| Remaining distance | 200 m | 0:48 |
| Finish | 5,000 m | 20:00 |
Check the terminal distance
When copying this into a worksheet, write the remainder separately. Adding a thirteenth whole lap would produce 5,200 m and change the task. If your target divides into an exact number of laps, the remainder is zero and the final full lap is the finish.
Common questions
How many laps is 5K on a 400 m track?
12.5 laps: 12 complete laps plus 200 m. Enter 5K and a 400 m lap length. A 20:00 target gives 1:36 per full lap and 0:48 for the final 200 m. The partial lap stays separate in the result.
Is four laps exactly one mile?
Four 400 m laps cover 1,600 m. One mile is 1,609.344 m, so the remaining distance is 9.344 m. To check it, select Custom distance, enter 1 mi and keep the lap length at 400 m. Use the distance of the lane or marked route you actually intend to follow.
